Horse riding can be a fun and enjoyable experience, but it’s very important to get the basics right. Most beginners have the habit of committing a number of the same mistakes while learning horse riding lessons. Here are a few common horse riding mistakes and how you can correct them –
1. Avoiding Helmet – Whether you are horse riding or walking along the beach on your horse, ensure you always wear the helmet. 2. Wearing inappropriate clothing and footwear – Wearing loose clothes like baggy pants, flowing wears and loose clothing (strings on jackets, scarf and so on) have more chances of getting caught on the saddle or get tangled. Such situations can cause you to tip off and get dragged for a distance. Even wearing shorts during horseback riding tends to get uncomfortable over long periods. Make sure you wear long pants. Never wear slippers, sandals, high-heels or flip flops as they tend to slide through the stirrup or sometimes get stuck within it. Make sure you wear thick boots with socks. 3. Get your lessons right – Most accidents occur when you don’t get the basics done right. Even if you are a seasoned rider or a beginner, remember “not every day is the same”. Make sure you learn the lessons right! This ensures your safety, as well as the safety of the pony! 4. Get the right posture – Never slouch in the saddle (like the cowboys in the movies). This makes it harder to control the horse. Make sure you have an erect posture with your head up and a clear sight of your path. Sitting straight and in a relaxed posture helps you get a perfect balance. Don’t hold your breath while concentrating on the ride. Stay calm, relaxed and enjoy the rhythmic motion of the horse ride. 5. Don’t hold the saddle and clutch your feet into the stirrups – While the saddle and stirrup are used for a comfortable seating position, never use the saddle to hold your grip. While riding, holding on tight to the saddle can cause it to turn on either side resulting in you falling over and getting dragged. Clutching your feet deep into the stirrups can be uncomfortable and dangerous too! Also, never tie yourself to the saddle or the horse itself as it results in you hitting the ground hard or getting dragged in case you fall down.
